CLO 1: Critical Review of Research Methodology in Music Studies

Task: Select two (2) peer-reviewed research articles published within the last 10 years on a similar topic within your specific area of interest in music research (e.g., music therapy, ethnomusicology, music education, performance studies).

Write a critical review paper (approximately 2,500-3,000 words) that analyzes and evaluates the research methodologies employed in these two articles. Your paper should not just summarize the methods, but critically engage with them to assess their strengths, weaknesses, and overall suitability for the research questions posed.

Your critique should address the following key areas for each article:

1. Research Paradigm & Design:

Identify the researcher's paradigm (e.g., positivist, interpretivist, critical). How does this worldview shape the study?

Critique the chosen research design (e.g., ethnography, case study, experiment, correlational study). Was this the most appropriate design to answer the research question? What are the limitations of this choice?

2. Sampling and Participants:

Evaluate the sampling strategy (e.g., random, purposive, convenience). How does the sample affect the study's generalizability or transferability?

Are the participants appropriate for the study's goals? Were there any potential biases in selection?

3. Data Collection Methods:

Assess the specific methods used to collect data (e.g., interviews, surveys, observation, musical analysis, archival research).

Were the instruments valid and reliable? How might the data collection process itself have influenced the findings?

4. Data Analysis:

Critique the process of data analysis (e.g., statistical analysis, thematic analysis, discourse analysis). Is the process transparent and rigorous?

Do the conclusions drawn logically follow from the analysis and the data presented?

5. Ethical Considerations:

Evaluate how ethical issues (e.g., informed consent, anonymity, positionality of the researcher) were handled. Were there any unaddressed ethical concerns?

Conclusion: Conclude your paper with a synthesis that compares the methodological approaches of the two articles. More importantly, provide concrete, well-justified suggestions for how the research in one or both of the studies could have been methodologically improved or extended.
