CPS 1032 - Homework 1

This homework is due Sunday, March 17 at 11:59pm. Please download the files in the Canvas of the course CPS 1032 under “Files” -> “Homework” -> “Homework 1 (Due Mar 17)” and follow the instructions in the file “HW1_instruction.docx”. And then submit your homework 1 in the required file format (*.docx, *.pdf) to the Canvas of this course under “Assignments” -> “Homework 1”. Any other formats such as *.jpg, *.png are not accepted.

Remind that there are Part A and Part B.


Part A: Inside Fun Staff Leader [50 points]


As staff leader for a local children’s entertainment facility, “Inside Fun,” you are responsible for creating and distributing guidelines and policies for the staff members. It is the time of year when many new staff members have been hired and you want to prepare a refresher document with the most important policies for staff members to follow.


Perform Preliminary Work

a.Open HW1_partA_data.docx and save it as HW1_partA_LastFirst.docx, where Last is your last name and First is your first name.

b.Display nonprinting characters such as ‘?’. Position the insertion point in the blank paragraph below Policy Summary and insert the text from the file HW1_partA_text.docx.

Check Spelling and Grammar and Edit the Text

c.Perform a Spelling & Grammar check. Address any incorrectly spelled words and then proofread the document to ensure there are no other errors.

d.Replace the word “clear” in the second paragraph of Other Reminders with a synonym from the Thesaurus: unobstructed. Change the word “an” in front of unobstructed to a.

e.Change the words “FirstName LastName” in the second to last line in the document with your first and last name.

f.Insert a diagonal custom text watermark in the document that reads For Posting.

Create Headers, Use Symbols and Improve Readability

g.Add a plain, right-aligned page number at the top of each page.

h.Edit the header of the document and add the text Inside Fun Policy Summary on the second line.

i.The words “out of order” in the second paragraph under the heading Other Reminders break across two lines. Improve the readability by replacing the spaces between them with nonbreaking spaces.

j.Insert a page break before the heading Other Reminders.

k.Adjust the margins of the document to Wide.

l.Set the zoom level to 1x2 pages. Observe that the body text is quite close to the header text. Increase the top margin to 1.5”. Return the zoom level to 100%.

Finalize the Document for Distribution

m.Save your document and then save it in Portable Document Format (PDF) as HW1_partA_LastFirst.pdf, where Last is your last name and First is your first name.

n.Run the Compatibility Checker for only Word 2010. Inspect the document and remove all document properties.

o.Add Policy and Reminders to the Tags in the document properties. Use your first and last name as the Author.

p.Preview your document.

q.Save and close the file. Submit the following to the Canvas:

HW1_partA_LastFirst.docx (the Word document)

HW1_partA_LastFirst.pdf (the PDF file)



Part B: Maintenance Department Communication [50 points]


As an intern in your school’s maintenance department, you have been asked to prepare a communication that specifies the schedule of several services and reminders for staff and faculty during the upcoming break. The department’s supervisor has provided details for you to include in your document. The document will be posted to the school’s intranet as well in different areas on campus, so you’ll need to make sure it looks professional.


Working with Styles

a.Open HW1_partB _data.docx and save it as HW1_partB_LastFirst.docx, where Last is your last name and First is your first name.

b.Change the style of the title “Upcoming Break: Maintenance Reminders” to typeface Times New Roman, font color “Orange, Accent 2” in Theme Colors, font size 26 pt and bold.

c.Apply the Heading 1 style to the text “HVAC Schedule” and “Reminders”. Apply the Heading 2 style to the text “Dorms”, “Academic Buildings” and “Administrative Buildings” in the HVAC Schedule section.

d.Modify the Heading 1 style so that the font color is “Blue” in Standard Colors.

Applying Font and Paragraph Formatting

e.Select the paragraph below the heading HVAC Schedule and set a right and left indent of 0.5”. Center the text. Apply 8 pt paragraph spacing before the paragraph. Apply a top and bottom double paragraph border of ? pt in the color “Orange, Accent 2” and set the shading to “Orange, Accent 2, Lighter 80%”.

f.Select all text from the heading “Dorms” to the second paragraph in the heading “Administrative Buildings” and change the layout to 2 columns. Adjust the line spacing for both paragraphs under the heading “Administrative Buildings” to Multiple 1.2 so that the text in the right column is of equal height to the text in the left column.

g.Select the three paragraphs of “Reminders” starting with “Set thermostats” and ending with “Turn off lights” and apply the numbered list format 1). Select the two paragraphs “Empty refrigerators” and “Clear ice trays” and apply the bulleted list format with the checkmark symbol . Apply the same list style to the two paragraphs “Unplug chargers” and “Turn off appliances”.

h.Change the font color of the sentence starting with “Space heaters” and ending with “run times” to Red. Include the period but not the paragraph mark.

i.Create a hyperlink to http://maintenance.ourcollege.edu from the last line in the body.

Inserting Graphics

j.Insert the picture file HW1_partB_tools.png at the beginning of the last paragraph in the document. Change the height of the image to 0.55” or 1.4cm. Change text wrapping to Tight and move the image so it that is aligned with the left margin and the top of the last paragraph in the document.

k.In the document properties, put your first and last name as the Author.

l.Save and close the file. Submit HW1_partB_LastFirst.docx to the Canvas, where Last is your last name and First is your first name.
