Background

? This assignment requires you create a new website using the criteria below. If you already have a

personal website, you cannot modify it to meet the requirements of this assignment -- you must

create a new site.

? You are not required to use a Macintosh computer to complete the webpage but you must use

Google Sites to create a three-page website.

? If this is the first webpage you have created, you may find it helpful to work on the assignment

during a time when a CS110 TA is holding Lab Support Hours. If you have problems, the TA will

be nearby to answer questions or help you set up your website.

Acceptable Use Policy Notice

There are rules governing how students use their Rutgers email account. While you can and should use

your account for academic purposes as you will be doing with this assignment, you must never use this

account to try to make money or to run a business. It is important that you understand the proper

manner in which you should use your Rutgers computing privileges. Read the Acceptable Use Policy and

related documents if you have not done so recently. Violation of this policy will result in permanent loss

of your account along with other possible repercussions.

Purpose of Assignment #2: Create a Website

? Create a three (or more)-page website using Google Sites

? Know how to save and place documents, pictures, or other information on your website, to be

viewed on the web.

? Know how to look at and edit pages you have created

? Create a website that includes specific characteristics and features

Important: For this assignment, create a website that provides only general information and no personal

identification.

? Do not include personal information on any part of the site, other than your first name in the

title.

? Do not include your email address, campus address, home address, telephone number(s), or

personal schedule.

? Use discretion in determining what information to put on your website. At the end of this

semester you can revise your website and include whatever personal information you feel is

appropriate.

CS110 Fall 2019 2

Viewing a Webpage

? You can look at your webpage at any time by opening a browser window and supplying the

address (URL) of the page or selecting the Preview Page option in Google Sites. Even if your page

is not complete, looking at it in a browser may help you make design decisions; you will see the

latest version. But remember, although you may have made changes to your webpage and see

them in the editor window, if you have not saved the changes, you will not see the updated page

in the browser window.

? You can run both applications – Google Sites and browser. You will see windows from both

programs on the screen and can move from one to the other as you develop and revise the

webpage. You only need to be aware of which one is the active window.

Open a browser window to verify the layout and design of your web pages.

Assignment Specifications: Create a Three-Page Website

? Create and name a website using Google Sites.

? Enter the name of the website in the Name Your Site box

? Complete the Your site will be located at this URL box with your username and title. For

example, Nelson's Information on cell phone use.

TOPIC for Assignment #2 (Google Sites): Your personal choices in energy consumption, waste disposal,

transportation, entertainment, food, water consumption and conservation, cleaning agents, etc. makes an

environmental impact. The topic for your website should focus on one of the many areas to help

improve the environment or to create a sustainable environment with the help of technology and/or

computing innovations. The topic you choose should include information on the use of some

technological strategy or computing innovation and how it affects the environment (positively and/or

negatively).

Some ideas:

? Transportation – are there computing innovations or technologies that help improve (or do not

negatively impact) the environment or society?

? Online shopping—how does this technology affect society, economy, culture?

? Water conservation—what technological advances might help with water conservation?

? Agriculture-- what technological advances have been made that help improve (or do not

negatively impact) the environment or society?

You are not limited to the topics above. You can choose any computing innovation that helps improve the

environment or that helps create a sustainable environment

Choose a computing innovation. Address at least three of the big ideas below:

1. Why and/or when was this technology/computing innovation introduced?

2. How does the technology work or function?

3. How does this technology/computing innovation help to preserve and/or improve our

environment or affect our society?

4. What negative effects might this technology have on the environment or society?

5. What is the future of this type of technology?

6. Does this technology threaten our privacy? If so, how?

7. What forms of data does this technology need in order to work as intended?

Be creative with your choice! Also note that Assignments #3 and #4 will revisit your choice.

? Assignment #3 will ask you to create a survey to consumers related to your topic. Details will be

posted in the Assignment 3 description.

CS110 Fall 2019 3

? Assignment #4 will ask you to answer in detail:

o What are the beneficial effects and possible harmful effects of the technology

(computing innovations) related to your choice?

o How is data collected or used to improve the environment (or gain knowledge about its

effect on the environment).

o Are there any security or privacy concerns that should be addressed that might be

related to the technology and computing innovations related to your choice?

You do not have to address these details in Assignment #2 Website but keep this in mind when

you choose your topic!

Although you will incorporate a number of specific features in the pages of the site, this assignment is

fairly free form in that most of the information you supply and the format you use is up to you. The

website you create will illustrate web editor software features, but should also give a professional look.

Don't overdo the use of features. You must include the features and sections listed below -- your TA will

look for these items when grading your webpage. Refer to the Webpage Assignment Self-Check at the

end of this document.

Adding Images to a Website

To make an interesting page you may want to insert a variety of pictures, but this is not expected for this

assignment. Pictures take up a lot of memory and the process of inserting images on a webpage can

become quite involved depending how they were originally created. You may want to learn more about

inserting images later, on your own. For now, search Google Images to locate a suitable image and save it

to the desktop as a .jpeg file. You can also use any legitimate image you find on the Web or use your own

favorite image. The image must be viewable when your document is visited through a browser. It's best

to use an image that is in a standard format such as GIF or JPEG.

Adding Videos to a Website

Search YouTube or Google Videos for a suitable video to complement your website theme. On the Home

page of your website, copy the URL of the video and insert it into the webpage. Note that video outline

box only will appear on your webpage and the video itself will not appear on the page until you view it in

a browser. (Click on the topmost image in the table above.)

___________________________________________________________________________

To check everything works the way it should and to submit the assignment:

1. When your website is complete, log on to a different computer, open a browser, and enter your

website URL. Use a different browser so you see your webpage as others see it.

2. Open Canvas and submit the location (URL) of your website through Assignments tool, The edit URL

for your ScarletDocs document is submitted in the Website URL text box in Assignments on Canvas.

3. To verify your assignment has been graded, check Canvas Grades.

Use the Webpage Checklist Self-Evaluation form below before you begin the assignment and again

before submitting your finished work to Canvas. Your assignment will be graded using a similar

checklist!

Directions: Use the Webpage Self-Check checklist to review your work before you

submit it to Canvas.
