Upgrading the Local Area Network of a Bank

NOTE: This ICA counts toward 70% of your overall marks.

1 INTRODUCTION

HSBC BANK uses one office location in London with multiple floors. The

networks in these locations are in urgent need of replacement. It no longer

meets the stringent demands for availability and performance required for

today’s banks. All hardware and cabling requires updating along with the

design. We are looking for a solution that will not only meet current needs but

will continue to deliver a service level that meets our needs for the

foreseeable future.

Project Goals and Objectives

Key goals and objectives for the new network(s) include: -

? High performance

? High availability

Manageability, a network that will be cost effective to run and provide a lower

Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) than our current network.

Purpose of this project

This project lays out in detail the requirements for the new network(s) - this

includes any constraints and limitations.

2 BACKGROUND

Institution's Background

HSBC BANK is one of the leading financial institutions in the UK today. They

provide financial services for a wide range of British businesses and

industries.

Technical Environment

Our technical environment is as follows: -

? Currently running with Windows Vista on the desktop

? Servers are a mix of Windows and Linux

? Using TCP/IP – currently using IPv4

? Networks details are as follows:

o Using old Layer 2 switches, and router.

o OSPF or EIGRP for internal routing

o ISDN for Internet connection

Current Business System

Business systems that the current bank network supports are:

? Email and Web applications

? Banking software system

? Financial system

? Payroll

? Purchasing

? Office applications

NOTE: Assumptions can be made on the current costs of the network and

what it contains.

3 SCOPE OF THE SYSTEM

The scope of this project is limited to the banking office location in London

with 6 floors. This includes the network services to bank itself as well as

services to the support office which must provide all services listed in section

above.

The bank in London will support 80 officers. There are 10 support staff and a

senior management team of 5. There are 20 networked printers that are used.

The bank houses 5 servers of different kinds (for email, web, file storage,

database and domain server). The bank and support services operate during

core hours of 9 am to 6 pm physically and also support online access and

services for 24 hours, except for maintenance periods.

4 KEY REQUIREMENTS

o Performance

o All banking floor transactions must complete in less than 1ms

o All supporting transactions must complete in less than 5ms

o Availability (on a monthly basis)

o Banking availability must be 99.999%

o Support services availability must be 99%

o Security

o Secure external link to the Internet

o Secure connection for remote workers

o Internal security mechanisms, including access controls

o Cost effective

o Overall TCO lower than current TCO (assumptions can be made)

o Manageable services that will reduce power usage and

maintenance requirements

5 FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS

We require a new network that will meet the key requirements outlined in

Section 4. The network will handle all of the data traffic from banking officers

themselves and it must be handled with high performance and availability

requirements. The requirements for all other traffic are less rigorous.

o The new networks must continue to provide this level of service for a

minimum of 5 years, and so must be designed with this in mind.

o The network must provide a cost effective solution showing a simple

costing table.

6 TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

Technical requirements are as follows:

o IPv4 Protocol and subnetting can be used. You can choose your own

Class C IPv4 address. VLSM (Variable Length Subnet Mask) subnetting

should be done showing optimal IP address allocation. A subnetting table

should be shown.

o Ethernet (IEEE 802.3) is required. VLAN designs on switches can be

implemented. STP (Spanning Tree Protocol) with switches can be

implemented

o Backup and restore functionalities and options for disaster recovery.

Optional: Off-site (single or multiple) network option for backup can be

shown on another site or multiple sites. Routing protocols like OSPF,

RIPv2, EIGRP or alternative internal routing protocol can be used to

connect the multiples sites or you can use static routes.

o Security - Internal security measures must be explained and a

Firewall/IDS/IPS is required

o A good internet connection (possibly with fibre optic technology or ADSL)

o A detailed network design diagram must be provided showing all the

subnets within the LAN and connection to Internet and possibly an

optional remote backup site.

7 POILICY REQUIREMENTS

Based on the scenario outlined, you should produce a brief policy section in

the report that will address backup, disaster recovery and ethical and

professional issues involved in the administration and management of a Local

Area Network.

? The storage and disaster recovery policy will include:

o Availability management

o Server backup and restore measures

o Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity.

NOTE: Good business continuity plans will keep a company up and running

through interruptions of any kind: power failures, IT system crashes, viruses,

natural disasters etc.

? The ethical and professional issues policy of a LAN will include:

o Software piracy

o Licensing issues

8 IMPLEMENTATION REQUIREMENTS

The detailed network design and how the network will be implemented in

detail are required.

? You can use network simulation tools like Riverbed Modeler Academic

Edition/Packet Tracer or similar tools to model the network.

? You can use the simulation tools to simulate part or whole of the

network and to show the different performance aspects of the network.

You can choose to show the network as a whole OR network segments

(or functionalities) of it in operation – showing the efficiency of the

design and protocols used.

? We expect you to justify the use of any protocol or technology.

? Your simulation outputs can be like performance graphs (of throughput,

delay, packet loss, response time etc.)

? Through the simulation output, your job is to convince the HSBC BANK

about your efficient design and implementation that you can offer.

9 REPORT

Your report can be of maximum 3000 words (slightly flexible) on the

requirements listed (under section 4, 5, 6 and 7).

Apart from the introduction section in the report, it is suggestive to have

sections on network analysis (having details of what needs to be done with

your assumptions etc.), network design (having details of topology diagrams

using simulation tool or MS Visio) and network implementation (having

details of using simulation tool with output graphs), along with any other

needed information. The last section of your report can be your policy

requirements.

Referencing can be added as needed. Use appropriate assumptions when

network information is not provided.

10 APPENDICES (Optional)

Any other details which you think should help your ICA submission can be

added here. This will not be included in the word count.

NOTES ON RIVERBED MODELER AND PACKET TRACER:

(a) If you are using Riverbed Modeler Academic Edition (free software) there will

be a limitation of 80 total nodes in your network with less than 20 core

nodes. If you have more than that, the simulation will not produce results. So

in that case I suggest the following:

Create TWO scenarios.

? In the first scenario, design a LAN topology with all the necessary

number of nodes as in the ICA, but don’t run the simulation, as it

won’t run with so many nodes. You can use the screen shots of your

design from this scenario.

? In the second scenario (by duplicating first), design the LAN to have

less number of actual computer nodes and run the simulation of a

“representative LAN”. Or better use can use LAN model from Object

Palette and set the number the nodes to what you need (say 60 or

100 etc.; right click and find the option through “Edit Attributes”). See

the figure below. You can get output graphs through this scenario and

use it in the report.

(b) If you are using Packet Tracer and there will be no such limitations, but the

graph generation may not be as good as Riverbed Modeler – but there are

other ways to show that your design works through successful ping, showing

delay values etc.
