ANUC 1710 – Web Development and Design

Semester 2, 2018

Assignment 2 – Web Project

Overview

This assignment gives students opportunity to apply the design principles and techniques learned from the course

so far into a web development project. In particular, students will develop a full functioning web site using the frontend

technologies (HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript) and the Progressive Enhancement framework (structure,

presentation and behaviour layers). The web site will have two main sections:

1. Personal section: a section about the students themselves, including basic personal data and hobbies.

This should be standard to any personal web site on the Web.

2. Content section: A section contains the research topic that the students completed in their assignment 1

(Research project). The content in this section can be drawn directly from the previous Research report.

Assignment requirements

At the minimum, the final web site should have the following features:

Main requirements

? HTML: 10 - 15 unique pages which are well structured using HTML5 elements. Include at least:

o A site map: This page should clearly depict the organisation/structure of the web site, possibly using

a table or links (or both) or an image map.

o An Image gallery of relevant graphics. All graphics used in this section must be converted to

.png extension.

o A video or audio media embedded using HTML5 tags.

? External CSS: all styling and layout are handled in an external CSS file. Use at least 10 CSS rules. Make sure

your CSS includes comments that would be useful to someone maintaining the web site, things like the

purpose of each rule, exceptions to its use and the choice made as to which selector is specified.

o The page layout is responsive to different screen sizes and media types (screen and print).

? JavaScript: include a form that makes use of web storage elements and JSON data structure

(e.g. feedback/registration form).

? Add at least one additional feature to the web site which is not mentioned above (e.g. RSS Feed

technologies and other HTML5 APIs).

Other requirements

? Original graphic design (public domain art may be used if appropriate for the project) and proper

references for the information taken from other sources (e.g. use <cite> tag, and provide the full list of

references in a web page).

? The overall interface should be easy to use and provides some level of accessibility.

? Include a page for the code validation report: run HTML, CSS, JavaScript through the W3C validation service

and include some screenshots of the validation outcomes.

? In the final submission, students have to complete the Web Design Best Practices Checklist by T.A.

Morris. The more ticks you can give to this checklist, the better your web site will be.

Notes on use of images

All photographs/images used in this project must be royalty free and not “stolen” from the web. Students may take

their own pictures or find another site with royalty-free images (e.g., everystockphoto.com).

1

The project demonstration:

At the end of this project, students will present to their classmates the followings:

? Demonstrate the web site features and navigation, focusing on usability and accessibility features.

? Demonstrate that the web site built follows the progression enhancement and good design principles, i.e.

describe the design and development decisions for the web site; refer to the Web Design Best Practices

Checklist.

? Discuss the things that went well and not well on the site. Suggest some improvements to the web site.

Assignment milestones

Students must follow the deadlines closely to avoid losing any mark. For each milestone, certain submissions are

required.

Milestone 1: Web design planning (5%) – due on 17 May

Before jumping into designing and coding the project, students should be clear what they want for their web site.

Based on the topics they chose in the previous Research assignment; students will plan on what approach to be

taken for designing the web site. Submit a short paper to outline the following:

? Who is the intended audience?

? What tone, theme, metaphor and visuals might be used to convey the purpose of the site?

? What information will be presented by this site?

? Describe the primary organizational sections of the site.

? Include in a rough layout (pencil block sketch).

Students who wish to use a topic different from what they chose in the first assignment need to consult with the

lecturer. This may mean that it will take more time for them to collect (and reference) information for this project.

Milestone 2: Web design and prototype (5%) – Due on 24 May

Turn in a picture of exactly what the web site will look like. Submit one single page of your web site completed with

proper HTML and CSS. The code on this page should reflect the way the rest of the site will be when finished and

will be graded to the same standards.

Milestone 3: Completed web site (20%) – Due on 31 May

Check the requirements mentioned above for the completed project. Marks will be awarded based on how much the

project requirements are completed:

? HTML (5%)

? CSS (5%)

? JavaScript (5%)

? Additional features and other requirements (5%)

Milestone 4: Project demonstration and conclusion (5%) – Due on 4 June (during lab)

Each student will do a short presentation to demonstrate their web project and reflect on their learning experience

throughout the project. Check the previous section for the details.

Assignment submission

There will be a submission dropbox link for each milestone. Students must submit their work according to the

deadlines specified above. The completed project (source code and media files) should be zipped into a single file

and uploaded before the project demonstration.
