5AML0001 Marketing the Margins: Case Studies in the Cultural Marketplace

Essay Questions

You should answer ONE of the following questions:

1.  “Staged marginality is not necessarily an exercise in self-abasement; it may, and often does, have a critical or even a subversive function” (Graham

Huggan). Discuss this statement with reference to the content and promotion of ANY TWO literary works studied on the module.

2.  The act of storytelling is not only closely related to authorship but also to branding and labelling. Discuss this claim with reference to ANY TWO literary works studied on the module.

3.  Examine the function and influence of the literary manifesto AND/OR

literary prize in relation to the image and positionality of authors within the European publishing industry, with reference to EITHER:

a)  Alain Mabanckou’s Black Bazar AND the ‘ Pour une littérature- monde en fran?ais ’ manifesto.

OR

b)  The prize-winning literary works of Aras ?ren AND Emine Sevgi ?zdamar studied on the module.

4.  Crowdfunding and subscription models used by independent publishers
